Financial Fitness Greater Austin (FFGA), is hosting FFGA Week for the fifth consecutive year from April 21 through April 29. Local Austin residents can take advantage of awareness seminars that focus primarily on financial literacy and how to develop fiscal responsibility -- skills that serve as an avenue leading the way to a more secure financial future. These seminars are open to the general public across all demographics, regardless of income levels.
This year, FFGA will be holding two financial fitness contests, one for children and one for adults. The contests will challenge Austin-area citizens to learn and implement economic behaviors that will reflect positive change not only in their individual lives, but also within the community.
For the adult contest, participants will choose between a "credit" or "budget" packet and, after going through four financial activities, they will be asked to write an essay in which they discuss how the information learned can benefit them in leading more financially-sound lives. The contest runs from Monday, March 19 through Friday, April 13 at noon. The winning entry will receive $500.
Students from grades six to eight and nine to 12 participate in the annual "$mart Kid" Essay Contest, designed to help students learn economic and personal finance concepts and understand both budgets and the importance of financial planning. These skills are intended to prepare students to become better consumers, investors and employees. Four winners (first and second place from grades six to eight and nine to 12) will be awarded individual scholarships that will be deposited into savings accounts under the winner's name, as well as a free financial consultation for the winner and their parent(s). The deadline for the essay contest submission was Monday, April 9.
Winners of the FFGA Fitness Contest and the "$mart Kid" Essay Contest will be presented at the FFGA Press Conference scheduled for Thursday, April 26 at 10:30a.m. in the Texas Capital Extension (The Legislative Conference Center E2.002) 1100 Congress Avenue.
