UT Campus, Meyerson Conference Room (WCH 4.118),
Dr. Susan Napier, Professor and Director of the Japanese Program at Tufts University, will speak on "Of Consumption, Cosplay, and Canaries: Japanese Power at the Beginning of the Twenty-First Century." If Japan represents the future, what do we have to fear or hope for? Dr. Napier suggests that Japan act as a kind of sociocultural "canary in a coal mine", a kind of advance warning system for other industrialized nations—both positive and negative.
