This year, the Indian Students Association at the University of Texas at Austin is foregoing their annual club banquet to host All-In For Haiti, a formal charity gala benefiting the American Red Cross’s Haiti relief efforts. The event takes place Mar. 5, 6:30 to 11 p.m. at Eighteenth Over Austin, at the Hilton Garden Inn.

“We wanted to put on an event that united the South Asian community for entertainment and a good cause,” ISA President Anish Malpani said.

Features of the night include dancing, casino games, drink specials, and Indian/Western fusion cuisine courtesy of Curries by Design.

Though the event is geared mostly towards students, ISA has reached out to diverse groups all over the state. “We’ve been getting donations from parents, businesspeople, and companies. Our goal is to raise at least $5,000 by the day of the event," Malpani said.

The organization is also hosting philanthropy days, packed with activities to inform students about the importance of charitable events.

Their efforts kick off on Mar. 2 with a Bollywood film showing. On Mar. 3, ISA members will hand out baked goods on campus with a suggested donation. Later in the evening, members will host charades and s’mores to encourage gala ticket sales. On Mar. 4, ISA will engage in a version of Hold Up for Haiti. Members will be at various locations downtown and on campus with Red Cross containers to collect funds.

Mirroring the growing South Asian population in Austin, the Indian Students Association is a relatively large group at UT with more than 100 members. In addition to All-In For Haiti, ISA is involved with the annual Festival of India, which takes place April 23-25.

Ticket purchases and donations can be made online at http://www.ut-isa.org/haiti and on the UT campus in the West Mall and Jester residence halls. All-In For Haiti tickets are $15 for ISA members and $20 for general admission.
