The Census 2010 begins this month and it impacts everyone. From hospitals to schools to emergency services and new roads, $400 billion dollars of federal funding each year is spent based on these Census numbers. The Census also determines the number of seats each state receives in the U.S. House of Representatives.

To reach out the local Asian community, Mayor Lee Leffingwell will talk about Census 2010 at a Town Hall meeting on March 23, 7 to 10 p.m. at Fortune Chinese Seafood Restaurant in the Chinatown Center on North Lamar.

In a discussion moderated by KXAN's Mary Lee, Leffingwell will also answer questions and take comments from community members about community issues in a questions and answer period. The evening also includes an update about the city's Asian American Resource Center.

Community activist Channy Soeur urged members of the Asian American community in Austin to come out to the meeting with family and friends, and to participate in the process.

"I have lived in Austin for 33 years and this is the very first time that the Mayor of Austin is taking the time from his extremely demanding schedule to help spark the Asian community to partake in the upcoming Census. The Mayor cares about the Asian community and wants to make sure the Census count is complete and truly represents the Asian community. He is demonstrating that he respects our community by coming to work with us on the Census and other Asian issues, such as the AARC," wrote Soeur in an email.
