It was a picture perfect spring weekend on April 10 as Austin celebrated the ninth annual South Asian New year celebration at Zilker Park. The Zilker hillside theater was abuzz with excitement as artists from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, China and America performed musical and dance numbers in colorful traditional garbs.
A large variety of food stalls offered an authentic South Asian cuisine prepared on site like any local bazaar of the subcontinent. Vendors displayed a cornucopia of ethnic outfits, jewelry, henna, book fair and more. This free, fun-filled family event also provided entertainment and activities for children.
The City of Austin sponsored and promoted the public event organized by Texas Bengali Cultural Alliance (TBCA). Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell proclaimed April 10, 2010 as "South Asian New Year Celebration" in Austin. Mayor Pro Tem Mike Martinez and other City Council members, dignitaries, media representatives and community leaders attended this auspicious event.
The rich tapestry of growing diversity of the population in Austin is reflected in style through this unique event at Zilker Park that has been growing every year and has become an Austin tradition.
The event was sponsored by H-E-B, Silicon Laboratories, LCRA, Home Depot, GAMA Wholesale, Southwestern National Bank, CAS Consulting & Services, Church's Chicken, Kabir Auto, Shams Bazaar, Shahi Foods, Venture Engineers & Builders, Texas Energy Contractors & Engineers, Dhoom Production DJ Service, Mobile-4-U and Water Lily Realty.
