The idea of an Asian Radio in Austin, TX was proposed by the owner of two local radio stations, KLGO FM and KFON AM, Dick Oppenheimer, to give five to ten hours of daily air time on KFON 1490AM to Asian programming. Producers will have unlimited access to the facilities of the radio station to broadcast live or record their shows, or they have the option to purchase equipment to produce the shows from home. In return, producers would pay $100 an hour (an amount that can be negotiated) to the station to air their programs. The target date to launch the Asian Radio is Jan 1, 2012.

This is a great opportunity for the Asian community to speak through such a powerful medium as radio as a united and recognizable “voice” in the community at large, and most importantly, to bring the Asian community together so as to effect a positive impact on our own generation and the ones to come.

In order to run a successful radio station dedicated to Asian programming, it is crucial to establish several start-up committees to initiate the design and search for 1) potential radio program format 2) producers and 3) advertising revenue or sponsors.

The proposed committees include:
Committee of Radio Programming
Committee of Production
Committee of Advertising
Committee of Management and Budget

The responsibilities of each committee are described below.

Committee of Radio Programming: research and design various radio programs that will appeal to potential listeners and advertisers with the consideration of available talents. Decide on programming as to what programs should be aired at what hours to attract the most listeners.
Committee of Production: responsible for the actual production of the shows including booking talents and securing production props if any. Producers can be radio hosts as well.
Committee of Advertising: responsible of selling air time to businesses and/or sponsors.
Committee of Budget and Management: in charge of managing operation cost, budget, (negotiating air time cost), and coordinating the division of air time among interested Asian groups.

The main purpose of forming these committees is to ensure that the Asian Radio can start from a consensus of support from the Asian community. Once it is up and running, the shows should be completely in the hands of the producers.

This project apparently is not a small undertaking by any means, but if we can all work together, there is great potentiality. If you are interested in getting involved in any of the committee, please email acta@cs.com by September 30th. Once the committees are formed, then we can move forward to the next stage.

Time is of the essence. We should act swiftly if we want to see Asian Radio become a reality.

I believe that the Asian community in Austin will now have a wonderful forum which will allow everyone to share in these rich and various cultures. I am excited to also see that instruction in the Chinese language (as a second language) is also on the table. Can't wait till January.

Best wishes

Questions and suggestions:
1. Great idea and perfect time to launch the station
2. Is focus only on Chinese/China?
3. Are other Asian ethnic considered?
4. I suggest shows to include Asian food, health and wellness program ( I would be interested in helping with this program )
