Phase one of the Austin Hindu Temple and Community Center opened with a grand ceremony on February 9, 10 and 11. People came to celebrate the opening of the temple with three days of festivities. U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, who is the founder and chairman of the Senate India Caucus, spoke during the formal inauguration ceremonies.
"We are enriched by the contributions of Indian Americans," Cornyn said. He noted that India is the world's largest democracy, to which the audience responded with plenty of applause. "We look forward to working for you and with you."
Meanwhile, friends, family and community members lined up at the Ganesh Temple. A long line also snaked around a tent set up for the free lunch for visitors. Spirits were high as the community gathered to celebrate Austin's newest Hindu facility.
