Master Shi Fu Hwang dreamed of bringing people from the diverse martial arts from all over the world together. In 2006, that dream came true with the first ever Austin Martial Arts Festival.
"Our Festival is a place for amateur martial arts competition and cultural celebration from around the world. Our competitors' training backgrounds are primarily from the USA, Brazil, China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan," Hwang said.
The Festival, in its third year, features an amateur martial arts tournament of martial disciplines from east and west in the 11 competition rings featuring Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu weapons, Tai Chi (including weapons and Push Hands), San Shou, Shuai Chiao, Kali, Panatukan, Wu Shu as well as others.
In addition, attendees can learn from a lecture by "The Body Detective", attend a fishing clinic and see numerous demonstrations (including sword) by skilled martial artists. Step into another place and time with the cultural presentations of music and dance from around the world. Various vendors will offer presentations of history, art, jewelry, protective gear, clothing, DVDs, health products and services.
And don't miss the big finale is an evening celebration with Finals for Grand Champions, special recognitions, and the American Pioneer Alliance Awards.
The third annual Austin Martial Arts Festival takes place Saturday, Oct. 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Crockett Center, 10601 N. Lamar Blvd. Tickets are $15 adults ($12 advance) and $8 child ($6 advance); family discounts available. For more information, visit www.AMAFest.org or call 512-321-3548.
