A little over a year since Chinatown restaurant on Mopac started serving dim sum, it has blown away Austin with its exceptional dim sum. In 2008, Chinatown swept the Austin Chronicle awards for dim sum for both readers and critics.
And now, Chinatown owner Ronald Cheng has set his sights on conquering downtown. Ronald Cheng Chinatown Downtown opens January 15 in the old Noodle-ism site at 107 Fifth Street.
The new location will offer the same menu of Chinatown on Mopac, minus a few items, as well as dim sum Monday through Friday, 11 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. on Saturday (closed on Sunday). What genius – dim sum for late night!
“We do believe our dim sum is the best in the country. We’re comparable to Hong Kong’s five star restaurants. Everyone walks out happy and smiling,” Cheng said.
Cheng describes the new restaurant as a “simple Chinese diner,” he said, adding that anyone would be comfortable whether in coat and tie or shorts.
Cheng hired a master chef out of retirement from a top San Francisco restaurant to head up the new location. “It’s known as the best [restaurant] there – If I told you the name, I’d be bragging,” Cheng said with a laugh.
Restaurants and food are in Cheng’s blood. His mother opened the third Chinese restaurant in Austin 26 years ago on Burnet Road. The first two Chinese restaurants have closed, but Cheng is still continuing the family legacy.
The secret to his success? It’s all about the details, he said. Food is presented artfully on the plate. Servers are attentive. The ambiance is elegant, yet comfortable. Even the red lacquer dim sum service carts are custom-made to keep the food hot.
“You start with a beautiful thing … It’s presentation first, aroma second and flavor is the last part,” said Cheng. “We bring the best quality, manage the details and provide excellent service.”
Come celebrate the grand opening of the new Ronald Cheng’s Chinatown Downtown on January 15. And don’t miss Cheng’s explosive annual Lunar New Year celebration at the Chinatown on Mopac, January 26.
“We want to open with a bang!” Cheng said.
