Nearly 2,000 people celebrated the Lunar New Year at the Tet Festival on Jan. 17 at Lanier High School. Attendees and performers alike wore colorful, traditional clothing and many veterans wore their uniforms.
It was an all day and evening affair, complete with entertainment and traditional Vietnamese foods. The youth fashion show was a special favorite this year, according to event organizers.
The festival was put on by the Vietnamese American Community of Austin Texas (VACAT). During the year, VACAT provides many services for the community including computer classes, ESL instruction, citizenship training and other help for low-income people.
“It’s for the whole community – not just the Vietnamese community,” said Thuy Phan, VACAT president.
VACAT has recently changed direction with the election of new officers, Phan explained, saying that the group is more focused on providing social services.
“VACAT used to be a political organization protesting communism in Vietnam. While we still have that, we are focusing on the local community. We just want to get our community into the mainstream society,” Phan said.
