Check out the Austin Film Society's upcoming Essential Cinema series, “Children of Abraham/Ibrahim: Films of the Middle East and North Africa.” This third annual presentation focuses on recent films from North Africa and the Middle East, an area rich in history, wonderful art and literature, but mired in war and misunderstanding among the three religions which all trace their roots back to Abraham/Ibrahim.
"This is our local attempt to bring human faces and individual stories to the statistics and overwhelming images seen on TV and computer screens daily throughout the world," wrote Chale Nafus, Director of Programming for the Austin Film Society. "In light of events in Mumbai in late 2008 we have decided to include two films from South Asia in hopes of creating greater understanding of historic forces acting upon Pakistan and India."
The series runs February 17 to March 31 with Tuesday evening screenings at 7 PM at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar (1120 S Lamar). Admission is free for AFS members, $4 for non-members. For complete film descriptions, visit www.austinfilm.org, or contact the Austin Film Society, 322-0145.
