The Asian New Year went off with a supersonic bang at the Chinatown Center in North Austin on Saturday, Jan. 31 and Sunday, Feb. 1. With firecrackers galore, dancing lions, clanging cymbals and booming drums, the year of the ox was warmly welcomed.

Families especially enjoyed the fun with kids activities and other entertainment. But most of all, it was about experiencing Asian culture.

Brothers Bao, 4, and Quan, 3, got up close and personal with the lions several times, feeding them lucky red envelopes filled with money.

“I like the yellow dragon,” Bao said. The brothers were both dressed in traditional Vietnamese celebratory attire.

For Kali Marrisa Chen Lewis, 4, seeing the dragon/lion dance was a magical experience.

“She loves it!” said mom Terry Lewis. “She wants to ride the dragon.”

In all, more than 4,000 people attended the festivities during the two days, a great success, according to event organizers.

“The purpose of this event is to celebrate Chinese New Year and Asian culture with the entire Austin community,” said organizer Julia Mercado of Red Velvet Events.
