The Dragon Boat Festival in Austin, now in its eleventh year, has grown to include 15 teams, including teams from the Chinese Student Association, Samsung and Dell. The festival is sponsored by the Asian American Community Partnership, which includes the Asian American Cultural Center.
A traditional Chinese dragon boat features a dragon head at the front of the boat, which is 40 feet long. It takes 20 rowers, 1 drummer and 1 steer-person to row the boat.
In addition to a unique sporting event, the festival also celebrates Asian cultures with various international dances, music and food. A Kid Zone features special activities for kids. Chinese government officials will attend and take part in the “Dotting the dragon’s eye” ceremony before the start of the race.
“With this economy, people have been weighed down. This is a free event and fun for families,” said Amy Wong Mok, CEO and founder of the Asian American Cultural Center. “All they have to do is bring a picnic blanket and just have fun and find the simple pleasures in life, enjoying each others company.”
Join the fun on Saturday, April 25, 10 to 3 pm at Festival Beach (at northeast corner of Lady Bird Lake). Admission is free and festival foods are available for purchase. For details, visit www.asianamericancc.com.
