Picture beautiful art, Buddhist chanting and soothing hot tea all in one space. The new 360 Gallery at the Fo Guang Shan Hsiang Yun Temple combines all these elements with a serene atmosphere.

An opening reception featuring works from the Multicultural Artists Partnership will be held this Sunday, May 1.

The Temple has been displaying art for several years and has held more than 10 exhibitions, said Cecilia Ling, gallery curator and manager. Now, artists will have a formal gallery to display their work.

The whole idea behind the gallery is not about religion, but encouraging cultural exchange. The name of the gallery symbolizes 360 degrees of openness, and also refers to its location on the Capital of Texas Highway near the 360 Bridge.

“It is beyond religion … this gallery is more focused on east and west culture exchange and, of course, art,” Ling said. “I always believe art and culture are very much related, and it is easier for people to accept art.”

Ling, who is also the founder of the Multicultural Artists Partnership (MAP), explained that the gallery does not have an exclusive relationship with MAP and is open to all artists.

“The purpose of gallery is to help artists to have more space for them to sell. This is a non-profit. We don’t take a percentage from artists. We do take a donation,” Ling said.

The current exhibit features glass and pottery created by local artists from diverse backgrounds including England and India.

“Everyone has a very different style. The pottery, I really like his work. He has a beautiful English style and the Indian female has a very unique style of pottery,” Ling said.

This Sunday the Temple is also celebrating Buddha’s Birthday, so the atmosphere will be especially festive. Come enjoy beautiful art, fabulous vegetarian food and experience a fun, cultural event.

The 360 Gallery of Austin is located at 6720 N. Capital of Texas highway. Operating hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 9:30am-5:00pm. Contact 360galleryofaustin@gmail.com for more information.
