Connections, marketing and peer support are essential to all forms of business, and minority owned businesses are no different.

Since 1972, the National Minority Suppliers Development Council (NMSDC) has been providing a link between corporate America and minority-owned businesses. The organization stands for “profit through partnership,” and provides opportunities for minority owned businesses of all sizes.

Last month, the Southwest Minority Suppliers Development Council (SMSDC), which is one 38 regional councils of the national organization, elected new board officers and honored local outstanding members at the end-of-year party.

As a reflection of the economy, the event was a scaled-down affair compared to the black-tie parties in the past.

“2009 has required us to tighten our belts, personally and professionally, and ask ourselves: what do we do that provides value,” said organizer Kelly Burris of State Farm.

The event was held at the State Farm Insurance Campus in northwest Austin, which volunteers transformed into a festive venue. Attendees enjoyed hor d’oeuvres, a dessert sampler and icebreaker games.

Of the “Denim and Diamonds” theme, SMSDC vice president Eva Leos explained, “[we wear something] sparkly sometimes and sometimes we had to put on our work clothes so we can make things happen.”
